I don't think this is necessarily true. Many skills we learn in university or college are practical, but the job market has decided they aren't. Employers used to invest in their employees and train them for the job- specific skills they need, but now employees are supposed to get those skills themselves via education (or potentially an entry level job... if they're lucky). We have to invest so much time and our own money in ourselves in order to get the same job our parents would've gotten out of high school.

I learned so much from my university career, but because the skills are more general and less hyper specific for a certain type of job, it doesn't matter anymore.
