Author’s Note: I generally don’t write about politics. Though I am a fairly politically engaged person, I find dwelling on it exhausting. This is an issue that is very close to my heart, however, and I needed to make my feelings heard on the matter.

This past weekend a cultural landmark of Toronto was shuttered for an indeterminate amount of time.

The Ontario Science Centre was shut down abruptly following an engineering report commissioned by the province. The report claimed the roof was in danger of collapse, leading the province to close the location permanently.

The OSC originally opened in September of 1969 and was a pioneer in providing a hands-on approach to science with its interactive exhibits. It was a popular destination for school field trips and hosts summer camps every year. It was a staple for the local community and the wider population of Ontario.

This closure comes on the heels of the Ontario government’s announcement in 2023 of their plans to move the Science Centre to the Ontario Place site – another controversial topic, as the provincial government has proposed plans to use Ontario Place as a location for a new luxury spa.
